The Korean Language Program at Yanbian University
Yanbian University is located in Yanji city, the administrative center of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture of Jilin Province in China. Being located in a traditionally Korean speaking area on the Korean border, and having excellent instructors, has made Yanbian University the first choice for Chinese students wishing to learn Korean in China.
Now Yanbian University is offering its first class instruction to speakers of other languages in a specifically focused Korean language program for foreigners.
Advantages
Whatever your purpose for learning Korean, learning Korean at Yanbian University Korean Language Program has distinct advantages.
First of all studying Korean at Yanbian University is a fraction of the cost of studying Korean at a university anywhere else. One year’s tuition is only 14,000 Chinese yuan or a little more than 2000 US dollars. Student housing is only 4,400 Chinese yuan per semester per person and meals, travel and most other student related expenses are all much cheaper than anywhere else in the Korean speaking world. For those learners with families, off campus accommodation is also very reasonable. For example, a two bedroom 1300sq ft, (120 sq m) furnished apartment with utilities, should cost under $200 per month.
Second, a large percentage of both the local residents of the area and the student body of the university speak Korean as their first language and almost all the local signs are in Korean. This gives ample opportunity to both practice and use your Korean language.
Third, for those foreign language speakers whose desire is to work or do business in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK), China is the gateway into the DPRK. And the Korean language program will have a focus on Korean as it is spoken in North Korea.
The Program
Using the most modern methods, Yanbian University plans to help learners master Korean in a two year intensive program consisting of four 16 week semesters. Each week will consist of five 4 hour days of formal instruction. This instructional time will be divided between 3 hours of core Korean courses and 1 hour of elective courses in Chinese or other subjects. Of course the students will have to complete assignments outside of instructional time.
Visas
Naturally, Yanbian University will provide a student visas for its students and their immediate families. In order to obtain a student visa through Yanbian University, first enter China on a tourist visa (NOT business or work visa!) from the Chinese Embassy or consulate serving your area. Once you arrive at Yanbian University at the commencement of your studies, our staff will process your student visa.
Transportation
Yanji, the city where Yanbian University is located, has daily direct flights to Seoul (Incheon International Airport), multiple daily flights to Beijing, and direct flights to many other cities in North East China. As well there is direct train service (soon to be high speed train service) to Beijing and points all over North East China. A newly built expressway connects Yanji to the rest of China and to Hunchun on the North Korean and Russian borders . Bus service is ubiquitous and cheap (in city 1 yuan, inter city varies but about 0.2 yuan per km). City taxi fares start at 5 yuan and then start rising after about 2km. Intercity taxis run at about 1.5 yuan per km.
